Rory Rennick is a historian, performer, and collector recognized as the world’s foremost authority on African diaspora and Black-imaged playing cards.

For more than 20 years, Rory Rennick has blended his talents in acting, motivational speaking, and prestidigitation to bring to life the incredible story of Henry “Box” Brown — the formerly enslaved fugitive who became a trailblazing magician and entertainer. Through his groundbreaking exhibitions and original research, Rory reveals the hidden stories and cultural power embedded in these rare artifacts. As the creator of Shades of Play, he shares this rich visual heritage with audiences worldwide.

Decades of passion and scholarship have enabled Rory to amass the world’s largest known collection of African diaspora and Black-imaged playing card artifacts — including cards, ephemera, figurines, and paintings. Each piece stands as a vibrant testament to Black artistry, resilience, and representation, offering audiences a rare window into history, culture, and imagination.

He is also a member of the Ohio Storytellers Network and the Ohio Local History Alliance. He is a founding member and historian of the International Association of Black Magical Artists.

In addition to his curatorial work, Rory is recognized as a leading authority on Black magicians and the cultural legacy of Black magical artists. His sold-out book, Henry “Box” Brown’s Legacy and My Life With Him, along with his full-length stage production and national lectures, highlights the enduring relevance of Black performance history and storytelling.

Rory’s scholarship has been shared through lectures at museums, universities, and major cultural events, leaving audiences both entertained and deeply inspired. A member of the Ohio Storytellers Network and the Ohio Local History Alliance, he is also a founding member and historian of the International Association of Black Magical Artists, bridging history, art, and magic in a singular and powerful voice. His work connects performance, scholarship, education, and public history, illuminating overlooked narratives while mentoring emerging artists and preserving cultural memory for future generations across diverse communities.
